Brief Introduction

Madhyapur Thimi is situated in the center of the valley between Patan, Kathmandu, and Bhaktapur. Because of its position, it served as a bulwark between Bhaktapur and Patan/Kathmandu during the late Malla period when there were often battles among the three kingdoms of the valley. Several legends surround the name "THIMI" and its meaning. Legend says that because the people of Thimi so successfully defended Bhaktapur, the kings of Bhaktapur called them "CHHEMI" meaning "Capable people"—thus praising them for their loyal constant support. According to the 2068 census, the total population of this municipal area is 83,036, with 42,723 females and 42,723 males, and it is currently estimated that the population has reached over 100,000. This city, with an area of 11.47 square kilometers, is located at an altitude of 1326 meters above sea level. This municipality occupies 9.6 percent of the total area of the district (119 sq km). The city is world-famous for its history, art, culture, and craftsmanship. It has a temperate climate, ranging from a minimum of 1°C to a maximum of 35°C. The average annual rainfall is around 123.1 mm.
